tight spaces

tight spaces

Are you a passionate gardener but don't have the outdoor space that you wish that you did? We hear this a lot. In fact, many retailers are responding to this and creating and selling some creative planters specifically for those that live in city spaces that have small outdoor spaces. Why compromise your love of flowers and gardening when you don't have to? I personally live in a suburban home with tons of outdoor space but I can imagine the excitement of living in a big city in a downtown space where everything is in walking distance and you are surrounding by restaurants, bars and coffee shops. How fun would that be??

Well get excited because At Home on Main is developing new products even as I am blogging today. The picture above is just one of them! How amazing is the planter above? Building up is a great way to maximize space and add color to your balcony or patio. This planter is super versatile as well...we have used this to store vegetables in our kitchens like garlic, onions and potatoes as well as fruits like lemons and limes. What a great way to get those items off of your countertops/islands! We have even used this in playrooms to hold all those stuffed animals and small toys. It is a great addition to the At Home on Main's product line where we like to create products that can be used in multiple ways! What would you fill yours with? Keep checking back to find out when this planter goes live with our various retail partners to get yours!

quarantine cocktails

quarantine cocktails

Happy hump day! This morning I decided that I need some cocktails for a successful week so far! I have my bar cart of goodies and some fresh jalapeños from my garden that I am itching to use. What better treat today than a skinny pineapple vodka cocktail?? If you haven't tried some spicy, sweet cocktails before, this is the time. I love the combination and since most jalapeños are not super spicy (especially if you remove the seeds and membrane), it is perfect for me. I don't like to burn up my tastebuds but just a hint of spice balanced with the sweet tartness of pineapple, makes this the perfect summer sipper. You do have to infuse the vodka in advance so takes a bit of planning. I never really think about having cocktails until that day so you can do like I do and infuse the vodka in the morning for evening cocktails or if you are having a get together, you would want to infuse a big batch of it the night before to get the most flavor.

Doesn't the bar cart look cute? I love using our crates to keep everything nice and tidy and also it's easy to pull out to the kitchen island to mix up drinks and return everything in it's place. Handy and functional! Check out all of our colors - you can compliment your kitchen/bar cart to match your decor style!

Spicy Pineapple Cocktail

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup vodka
1 jalapeño, seeds removed and sliced
2 tablespoons pineapple juice
6 ounces sparkling water
Squeeze of fresh lime

DIRECTIONS:
1. Infuse the vodka by adding it with the jalapeño into a glass jar. Ideally let it sit overnight to get the most flavor. If you can’t wait like me, just infuse it in the morning for evening cocktails.
2. For the cocktail, combine one shot of the jalapeño infused vodka (1.5 ounces) with the pineapple juice and the sparkling water. Add a squeeze of lime.
3. Add ice, a pineapple wedge and a  jalapeño slice for garnish.

Enjoy!

Last days of summer

Last days of summer

We are quickly shooting into Fall and I for one can't wait. This year has been challenging (to say the least!) and I am ready for a fresh new year. One of the things that I will miss is all the fresh flowers that summer brings. Having said that, I am more than ready for some cooler weather and the leaves changing colors. Plus all the pumpkin flavors to come back into my life! I am very excited about some of the things that we have been developing, particularly for smaller, tighter spaces. We are getting very close to rolling out some of our new products and I think they will be well received. As I sit out on my patio and just take in the last of the warm weather and reflect on all the things that 2020 brought, I am filled with hope. Even though it has been challenging, some great things have also developed. The extra time that we got to spend as a family for one. The ways that the world has united when faced with a pandemic or when faced with injustice is another. So while there have been times when we all just wanted to pull the covers over our heads, looking towards the future and digging our heels in to adapt to new circumstances is what makes us all hope for a better future. I, for one, am hopeful and excited to see what that brings! Stay safe and well and let's all care about each other.

Home Schooling

Home Schooling

Many of ya'll are homeschooling these days and or doing a combo of homeschooling along with in school learning. Either way, while at home, finding the space to set up a "school" learning center for your kids can definitely be a challenge. If you don't have an office in your home already or perhaps it's already in use as you and/or your spouse now work from home when you once didn't, you are already struggling to find some space that would be conducive for learning. I am already doing this so I thought I would share on the blog in case anyone else is looking for ideas. I am using our large chalkboard crates as double duty as portable "work" stations. You could easily do this for the kids or if you have sacrificed your home office to them and find yourself moving from coffee table to dining table, then this is super helpful! Create your own little "go-to" box of office supplies or things that you are working on that is super portable. With our chalkboard sides, you can easily put names on them so that there are no mix ups! Just one more way that these handy crates can create some organization and flexibility!

Mix and Match!

Mix and Match!

While in quarantine, if even a small percentage is like me, lots of people are cleaning and organizing their homes. The place to start for me would be the kitchen as I am using it waaaaay more than I ever have. I like to surround myself with my favorite things in the kitchen that I use every day. I like for them to be very accessible so that I don't have to pull them all out again and again for every meal that I cook. To me, that includes my cutting boards and my measuring spoons/cups as well as my go-to spices and oils that I use most frequently. A great way to keep these things out but looking neat and decorative in the kitchen is to mix and match some of our products. Our large crates are perfect for holding cutting boards if you are like me and have a substantial amount of them. I put all my essential cooking "tools" in one our trays that I keep by the stove so that it's in easy reach.

Mixing and matching things is fun and many of our products come in a variety of colors that you can coordinate with your space.  I also love using the crates in my pantry where I can keep my vegetables and fruits so that I can easily see them.  We are also a big oatmeal family - so one of my favorite ways to use one of our crates is to create an "oatmeal center" - everything all in one place that I can easily pull down from my pantry and have all my stuff together.  Cuts the preparation time in half!  I do the same thing with a baking crate.  People who rather bake from a box would think differently if they only knew that the time consuming part of baking something from scratch is getting all the ingredients out!  My baking box includes my flours, sugars, baking powder/soda, vanilla extract, chocolate/chips, etc... When you are ready to make something like homemade pancakes or chocolate cookies, it's a breeze!  There are so many ways to utilize them and the different sizes make them so convenient!  What customized crate would you make for your pantry??

instant mood boost

instant mood boost

There are a few things that can boost my mood these days instantly. My healthy and happy family and friends of course and my garden. There's just something about fresh life growing that reaches into my soul and makes it sing. There isn't anything happier than fresh flowers. You can instantly transform a space with nature's beauty with all its vibrant colors. I automatically knew that as soon as we decided to create crates for our line that they would house many, many plants and flowers in my home. I am super fortunate to live in a place that affords a large home with more than ample yard space but we wanted to develop a product that could suit all needs. So if you are living in a smaller city space or an apartment, we have crates that come in all different sizes.

This photo was given to us by one of our customers and they absolutely love using our smallest crate for fresh flowers inside of their small home on their windowsills. How cute and cheery is that? Whether it's in a balcony or a small patio, these crates can be used to elevate and or used to beautifully frame a fresh bunch of flowers. I don't know about you, but nothing lifts my mood like seeing fresh, blooming flowers in the space where I live. We love hearing from our customers so please share with us how you like utilizing your crates and tag us on Instagram at @athome_onmain.

Happy Monday!

lemons make lemonade

lemons make lemonade

We love looking for new ways to utilize our crates! Special events are always a fun way to set them up but even for small gatherings at home, you can certainly make them work for you. When I have a few friends coming over on a hot summer day and we are planning to lounge outside by the pool, instead of going inside each time to get a refreshing drink, I love to set up a little beverage stand. It's convenient and cute and just looks super refreshing. One of my favorite drinks for when it's super hot outside is a refreshing and light lemonade. Isn't that par for the course right now...?! When the universe hands you a bunch of lemons, make lemonade ya'll. Or if you are feeling super frisky and you haven't seen your girlfriends in ages, then make a skinny margaritas!

How cute does this set-up look? What would be your drink of choice?

We have Peppers!

We have Peppers!

Don't you love gardening?? There is just something about growing something with your own hands and actually seeing the fruits of your labor. Many of our products can be used in gardens because it is a passion of mine. Everyone should have a thing or place that they hold onto in stressful times and the garden is my sanctuary especially now with everything that is happening.

I'm excited that our new product line of garden stakes is now out. I wasted very little time using them in my own gardens! Look at these peppers! Aren't they gorgeous?? Still growing but I can't wait to incorporate all the vegetables that I have growing in the garden into my meals. As we limit our forays out into public areas like the grocery stores, it's rewarding to know that you can produce your own produce right here at home. As an added bonus, you know exactly what you are eating and how your food was grown. I hope to share this passion with my own kids and can't wait to feed them food that I grew myself so that they can appreciate the art of it. Once our farmer's markets are open again in full force and it is safe to do so, I would love to take them there so that they can fully appreciate the love and care that goes into growing fresh local food. Look for our garden stakes at lowes.com or by going to this link!

Weekday Meal

Weekday Meal

We love when we get pictures from our friends and customers using our products!! My friend who threw the baby shower for her friend started her own blog and she has cooking videos as well as recipes on there. I love that she has some of our products and promotes some of our products. She made this amazing salmon in the air fryer and I was ecstatic to see that she used our wooden wine barrel platter to plate her creation! She shared her photo with me - doesn't it look delicious? You should definitely check out her website if you get the chance - she uses a lot of our products in her photography and also has links to where to get them at the bottom of her posts. Meanwhile, she shared her recipe for this delicious, healthy and easy meal made in her air fryer. I am excited to try it!

Spicy Sweet Salmon

INGREDIENTS:
-- 2 1-inch thick salmon fillets
-- 2 Tbsp honey
-- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
-- 1 tsp garlic powder
-- 1 tsp chili flakes
-- sea salt to taste (optional)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat your air fryer for 400F for 5 minutes.
2. Slightly warm up honey in the microwave.
3. Wash and dry the salmon filets.
4. Mix together well the soy sauce, garlic powder and chili flakes into the warmed honey.
5. Create a small foil packet the same approximate size of your air fryer basket. This is to catch the yummy juices and keep it with the fish and also makes clean up a breeze!
6. Place both filets in the foil packet.
7. Spoon the honey-chili mixture onto each, making sure to coat the sides of the salmon.
8. Then, carefully place the salmon fillets foil packet in the preheated air fryer at 400F for 8 minutes (make sure to check on it - you may need to increase/decrease your time depending on the thickness of your salmon.
9. When time is up, carefully remove it and plate. Depending on your soy sauce (I like to use gluten free, low sodium), you might want a light sprinkle of sea salt.

Enjoy with your favorite side dishes! I like to add veggies to the air fryer right after with a simple spray of avocado oil and salt and pepper.

Easy breezy and healthy! She also has a quick video with it all coming together which you can check out here: https://www.themonskerlife.com/post/spicy-sweet-salmon

reset. renew. repeat often.

reset. renew. repeat often.

So one of the things that I need to remind myself of (especially while the world seems not under our control), is to take moments for yourself to reset itself. I mean from the soul. We often feel like we have to be the ones to hold everything together and be the strong ones for the family. It all starts with being strong for yourself first. My favorite escape is taking a soothing bath and just letting things go for a little while. Just concentrating on quieting the mind and refocusing on myself. It sounds amazing because it is but it's also not easy carving out the time to do it. Life does get in the way and we tend to re-prioritize ourselves last.

I like having a bath tray made up of goodness to remind me that it's important to take these moments every once in awhile. I used to go and get manicures and pedicures often and used that time to slow my world down for the moments that I let someone else take care of me. With the quarantine, that hasn't been the best option so these days, I create my own spa. What is your favorite method to de-stress lately?

French Toast Bites

French Toast Bites

Here is the recipe for the French Toast Bites. It basically starts with a good French Toast. Then it's simple to assemble - just cut each one into 9 bite size squares and stack 3 on a wooden food skewer and top with a slice of strawberry. You can serve them lined up like soldier on our cutting board and use the ramekin inserts for toppings like syrup, whipped cream and even an infused berry coulis! How fun, pretty and delicious for your next party! Check out our "Products" section for links on the bottom of the product description to retailers where you can get yours!

INGREDIENTS
4 eggs
1 cup half and half (whole milk can be used as well)
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 6-8 slices bread (a simple but really good soft white sandwich bread)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract Butter as needed

INSTRUCTIONS
- Whisk together the half and half, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla extract in a big bowl
- Place griddle or pan over medium heat and melt enough butter in pan to coat the surface
- Dip bread slices in egg mixture (important: only dip for about 5 seconds each, making certain both sides are well coated but not soaked)
- Carefully place the bread on the pan and cook until golden brown on both sides - a couple of minutes per side

That's it! Make all of them at once and then cut and assemble onto the skewers. You can make these in advance and line them up on a pan and keep them warm in the oven at 200F and assemble on the cutting board when ready to serve. Dust them with powdered sugar for some bling and enjoy!

A Perfect Shower.

A Perfect Shower.

So my gal pal sent me the pictures from the baby shower from yesterday. A great time was had by all and the pictures looked amazing! She went with a brunch theme and had a bunch of miniature food so that all the guests could try a bit of everything and they were a huge hit. She mentioned that some of the guest's favorites were these small French toast bites that are pictured above as well as small handmade quiches which was an easy way for her to provide vegetarian and non-veg selections to hit all of her guest's palates. She was super surprised how fun the "make a onesie for the new mom" station went and she said that the things that each of the women came up with were inspiring and fun. Pictured above was one that her mom made that she loved. As fun as the event ended up, she was exhausted afterwards but the new mom had so much fun, that it was completely worth it for her. As a bonus, my friend provided the recipe that she used for her French toast bites and she got her cute food picks from our partner at amazon. I will post the recipe for those interested in another post. The best part - you can make them in advance and put them in the oven at 200F to keep them warm. Right before serving, she just dusted them with powdered sugar for presentation. It was literally the easiest menu item that she made that day so that definitely sounds like my sort of recipe!

Baby Brain…

Baby Brain…

As mentioned in my previous post, a team member of mine is planning a baby shower for her good friend and it is approaching quickly.  Her brain has been stuck on all sorts of ideas for the shower and sometimes Pinterest can be a lifesaver (as much as a nightmare)! Exhibit A: giveaways. I personally love giving live plants because they last and grow and, in my opinion, is much less wasteful then flowers no matter how beautiful they are.  I think that the succulents she ended up turned out adorable. The only challenge left for her (she has a perpetual black thumb - no joke!) is keeping them alive until Sunday! Exhibit B: a make your own onesies station. I've seen this a ton of times at all the baby showers that I have attended and I love this activity because people can be creative and the baby mama can also take them home with her. I also know that she will be running around the day of the shower making sure everything is flowing and everyone is happy so she wanted to make hers beforehand. It’s also a nifty way to show guests different ways to create their own and make them really special. I saw the that she made based on her Pinterest search and I absolutely loved it! I mean...can she make me one???  Next debate she is having is whether or not to make a full cake or mini cakes or maybe even a bundt cake... It’s a brunch sort of event and normally I’m a cupcake girl but I’m kind of digging the whole bundt cake idea. I'm sure that she will work it out but she definitely wants to use a crate to elevate it on a dessert table. She says that it adds interest and height and just makes the whole dessert display pop.  I can't wait to see what she comes up with and I have tasked her to keep taking photos so that I can brag out it here!

Celebrate the Moments!

Celebrate the Moments!

So one of the gals that works with me was an event planner in her pre-Corona life and you know what they say...once an event planner, always an event planner! This means that she absolutely loves throwing a good party and sees everything as possible party props and serving utensils. With our current products, she is like a treasure trove for me to re-think and re-imagine all the ways that they can be used for any event that I am throwing. She's currently in the process of helping to throw a baby shower for one of her really dear friends (Rona babies is a real thing guys!).

She had a great idea during this new Corona-era.  She had ordered a sewing machine (her hobby addiction is strong). While she had never sewed a thing in her life, she saw all these incredible people sewing masks for our intrepid healthcare warriors and she wanted to do her part.  Well, based on her rantings, it seems as if it is not easy.  Apparently even getting the thread through the machine is a task!  Every time I talk to her, she is literally spending all her time mastering the basics.  She finally was able to make a decent mask and had this idea to make some as favors for the baby shower.  How ingenious is that?  It also has the double benefit of having masks available for those women attending that would feel more comfortable within a small crowd. Aren't they cute guys?

Using our small crates for a centerpiece was a no-brainer.  She loves to bake so using them for a cake/cupcake/mini dessert/mini food holder is her favorite thing to do...our different sized crates had absolutely no chance not being used! Celebrating with a good party is just what all our souls need right now and what better way than to celebrate a new life coming into this world. So while 2020 is not off to the best of starts, I am still, as always, hopeful for the future.

Beach Day!

Beach Day!

Who else misses the beach?? As much as I would love to go and lay out on the sand and hear the water, it's still not the time to indulge. The next best thing? Create a bit of the beach mentality in your outdoor space! You absolutely don't need much space (more later on decking out small spaces!) but you can still feel like you are only a day away from a beach adventure! How cute are our rustic handmade shelves?? You can dress them any way that you like and they really pop on a wall. I am going to have so much fun playing with ways to change them up based on my moods. One of my new projects is to turn a small outdoor space into a functional multi use area. This shelf would be a perfect way to all sorts of fun things on my plant wall! More to come as I set it all up! Our mastermind creative team is also looking into offering this with a gold finish! Just a touch more fanciness to any space and let's be honest, who doesn't love a bit of gold? Can't wait to see what they come up with!

Father’s Day: Success!

Father’s Day: Success!

How was everyone’s Father’s Day yesterday?  I celebrated with the special guy in my life...in this home, we like celebrating each other when we can. On a pretty day, that means a manly cookout in our gorgeous backyard. It always amuses me when I literally put everything together and he turns on the grill and throws some burgers on. However, I guess it’s all about perspective...he thinks he was A) in charge and B) the mastermind behind the success of the night. Luckily he is cute and I let him shine (but secretly knowing that I’m the work horse and the brain in this relationship!).

Yet again, our cutting board/prep center saved the day so that I could load up in the kitchen and bring everything in one go to the grill for toppings. Not only are these boards beautiful but they are versatile and lightweight for carrying around. The hardest part was taking some photos while holding back the big guy from diving into the burgers. My favorite side dish rounded out the yummy meal....blistered shishito peppers with a squeeze of lime right off the grill. Yum!

Eating with our Eyes!

Eating with our Eyes!

So I have a confession...while I absolutely love cooking, during this quarantine, I have cooked waaay more than I ever wanted to. There literally comes a time when I cannot even think about eating something else that I have made for myself! Do you ever feel that way?? In addition (here is where my self rationalization kicks in), I really want to support our local restaurants so that they are around once our city opens up more fully. So, takeout meals occur with some regularity. However, there comes a time in one’s life where takeaway food shouldn’t necessarily have to be eaten right from the disposable container it comes in. We eat with our eyes first right? Presented in the right way, delivery food can take on a restaurant quality meal. This is just one of the reasons that I love our handmade wooden platter. So dang versatile, you can use it for so many things. One of my favorite ways is to present food on it. Whether it’s an appetizer or main course, these gorgeous pieces make whatever you have on them shine! I mean... I could have made this prepackaged sushi at home with hours of prep work right? My eyes say...absolutely!

Quarantine To-Do's

I don't know about ya'll but I have been working from home for over 3 months now and while I have finally come up with some structure to my days, I find myself getting antsy to get out. To combat those feelings, I have been looking for all sorts of projects around the house! As many of you have done or are currently doing, organizing my life seems to be the one thing that makes me feel better! I have a bunch of recipes that I have been given me over the years and most of them are on post-it notes and random.  This is the perfect time to think about organizing them and making them more accessible. I didn't actually get around to doing it but I was reminded again as Father's Day is barreling down on me. So hence, the post today!  How cute is this organized with my thank you cards and other things that I want to keep close to me so I remember to actually use them?  I loved it so much that I think I am going to make a whole new one for future gifts.  Not forgetting the wonderful man in my life, I am going to use one of our rustic crates to create a custom BBQ gift basket for him! There are so many uses for these handy, hand-made crates and I just love thinking of new uses for them. Hopefully you will check back on our blog to see all the multiple ways that we come up with - I will post them as we create them!  Also, we would love for you to share your ideas with us - you can find us on Facebook and Instagram too!
